Practicing and Promoting the Profession of Forensic Nursing

Wisconsin Sexually Violent Persons: Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center-Helen Kelly Conference 2017

Dr. Steve Kopetskie will present an overview of the sex offender civil commitment process and Sexually Violent Persons program at Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center in Mauston, WI. He will describe sexual recidivism risk assessment procedures, treatment goals and methods, and the legal processes pertaining to civil commitment, supervised release, and discharge.

SRSTC also offers a unique nursing experience – one that is both rewarding and challenging.  As our facility changes, and our patient population ages, nursing care has evolved to meet all of these needs.  Nurses at SRSTC are involved in all aspects of patient care.  One of our ongoing goals for nursing staff at SRSTC is supporting the understanding that they too have an “identity” within the practice of nursing itself.

Laura Thomas is a Registered Nurse. The majority of my nursing career has been at SRSTC.  As the facility has grown, so has my experience and interest caring for patients with mental illness.  Nursing is my second career.  Prior to obtaining my RN, I completed a Bachelor of Science in Communicative Disorders at UWSP.  I also have experience working for in the business world, which truly helped develop my passion for Customer Service.  I feel Customer Service is one of the core values found in nursing.
